St. Raphael's was founded by Reverend Alexander Macdonell in 1786. It was officially recognized as a parish in 1802.
The magnificent stone church was built by his successor, also named Reverend Alexander Macdonell (later Bishop), in 1821.
It was designated a National Historic Site in 1996.
St. Raphael's church is located in Glengarry County and is now under the guardianship of the Friends of the Ruins of St Raphaels whose mission is to preserve and enhance the site.
