An historical sign, erected in front of the church in 2001, marks the location of the former community of Whitfield. "Once known as Beechnut Corners. Major settlement on Hutontario St. By 1880: 3 stores, 2 sawmills, blacksmith shop, lime kiln, school, 3 churches, post office & 2 taverns. The remains of the Methodist cemetery, which was neglected for years. Following demolition of the old church building, the cemetery was cleaned up and the few remaining stones rearranged. The location of the graves can be clearly seen but most are unmarked. ©Copyright: Jeri Danyleyko
