As always changes continue to take place, some good and some - not so good. On the 'not so good' side, the former Methodist church in the ghost town of Whitfield is no more. The derelict building had been used for storage for many years. Portions of the adjacent cemetery still remain, although most of the stones have been moved to the Christ Church cemetery across the road.
On the good side, the former convenience store and gas bar at Melancthon has found a new occupant, an RV dealer. The store, which once served as a general store and post office is the sole remaining structure from the original Melancthon village. We wish the new occupants well.
Melancthon village has also found new useage as the site of the Melancthon wind project, an experimental wind farm that went into full operation in early March.
Discovery, Northwest Territories is being bulldozed this summer. Discovery, 85 kilometres north of Yellowknife, was once one of the most profitable gold mining communities in Canada. The mine and community, which has a peak population of up to 400 miners and family members, operated through the 1950s and 1960s, and closed in 1969.
Since then, it has been one of the country's most unspoiled ghost towns. It is only accessible by plane in the summer and a road in the winter.
The federal government has just completed a remediation study of the site, and in consultation with First Nations peoples, has recommended the site be bulldozed this summer.
